Samsung American Legion Scholarship

2013 ALA NM Girls State Participants receiving Bluestar Banners in honor of their family members who have served in the military.

As an American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State participant and if you are a direct descendant (i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, or a legally adopted child) of a U.S. veteran who served on active duty during one of the following war periods, you are eligible to apply for this $10,000 scholarship award.

Periods of War include:

  • World War I - Apr. 6, 1917 - Nov. 11, 1918
  • World War II - Dec. 7, 1941 - Dec. 31, 1946
  • Korean War - June 25, 1950 - Jan. 31, 1955
  • Vietnam War - Feb. 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975
  • Lebanon/Grenada - Aug. 24, 1982 - Jul. 31, 1984
  • Panama - Dec. 20, 1989 - Jan. 31, 1990
  • Persian Gulf War - Aug. 2, 1990 - Until cessation of hostilities
  • Includes Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, & War on Terrorism

If eligible, complete the online application as early as possible. Applications must be completed online in it's entirety by 11:59 pm Sunday, June 2, 2019. Any incomplete applications after this time will be found ineligible. There will be no exceptions to this deadline.

You will be able to save your progress and return to complete the form as needed. Once you select to submit the form you will not be able to make any further changes to your application so ensure all content is correct before submitting. 

Please work with your school advisor to complete this application as your school will need to verify part of your information via email.

Applications will be reviewed and scored by ALA NM Girls State officials during the session. The finalist will be announced Friday, June 7, 2019 during Closing Assembly. The ALA NM Girls State finalist will be forwarded for national review for the opportunity to win a $10,000 scholarship award.

This scholarship is an opportunity not afforded to all students so please ensure you give yourself enough time to complete the application.​

Proof of wartime service documentation

To obtain a copy of your veteran family member’s DD-214, you can go online to or immediately fill out this form (SF 180 Request Pertaining to Military Record). For details on how to complete the paper application please reference It takes time to obtain the DD-214, so apply immediately.

The following locations may be of assistance.

  • Please be advised that many certificates of discharge prior to 1979 may not appear to be “official” documents and may have been typed onto a sheet of paper. If you are unsure, please ask your local American Legion service officer. Locate your American Legion Department Service Officer at or download The American Legion Claims Coach Mobile App through Google Play or iTunes App Store.
  • The National Archives and Records Administration: 
  • The County Clerk and Recorders Office where the veteran resided.
  • The funeral home may have kept a copy if military honors were provided.
  • Monument company if VA headstone or marker was ordered.
  • If the veteran had utilized a VA Home Loan there may be a copy of the DD-214 with the title documentation.
  • Veterans who have signed up for EBENEFITS  through the Veterans Administration may be able to obtain a printable copy.
  • The State Director of Veterans Affairs may have received a copy of the veterans DD-214 at the time of discharge from military service. This will be specific to the state in which the veterans home of record.
