American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State COVID-19 Update
April 3, 2020
Dear American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State Supporters,
It is with a sad heart that we announce the 2020 sessions of American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State and American Legion New Mexico Boys State are canceled. With the current COVID-19 pandemic our boards have spent countless hours observing news reports and press releases from Federal, State and local government, working with the ENMU staff and meeting to discuss alternative options. Ultimately with the safety of our delegates and volunteers in mind and in the hope to do our part to flatten the curve the decision was made to cancel the programs to be held end of May/first part of June.
Although this is a sad announcement, we as a board hope that you join us in taking this in a positive stride. We will be utilizing this time to revamp, update, and make plans for the 2021 session of American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State.
I’m sure you are wondering, what does this all mean? American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is called a “once in a lifetime opportunity” because our students are only eligible to attend one year. With this cancellation, our board has held much discussion about how to rectify the situation for 2020 eligible delegates. We, along with multiple AL Boys State and ALA Girls State programs across the nation have made the same tough decision to cancel programs in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, we are confident that the appropriate amendments will be made to allow both Junior and Seniors at the 2021 Session of American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State. We strive to give every young woman a true and full Girls State experience.

American Legion Auxiliary New Mexico Girls State is closely monitoring developments concerning COVID-19 (coronavirus) across New Mexico. Currently, updates on COVID-19 are frequently changing as medical professionals are updating the Centers for Disease Control. Isolated Cases in New Mexico have been reported, but they are not widespread. However, we are monitoring the situation daily and are working closely with our host institution, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, to stay informed should the situation change.
ENMU has posted an informational website related to COVID-19. According to the website:
While there are no cases of COVID-19 at the ENMU-Portales campus, there are cases of the novel coronavirus in the state of New Mexico. Our decisions are always guided with the safety of our campus and the health and well being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors in mind. Eastern New Mexico University has an all hazards emergency operations plan. The ENMU-Portales campus has past experience dealing with pandemics. In 2009, the ENMU-Portales campus was impacted by a subtype of Influenza A (A/H1N1), which some referred to as the "Swine Flu." The situation is rapidly evolving; we will continue to monitor the situation regularly and adjust as needed.
Currently, we will not be altering our schedule for ALA New Mexico Girls State in June. We are moving forward with planning for our 2020 session and will continue to register students. We look forward to hosting the 73rd session of ALA New Mexico Girls State from May 31 – June 5, 2020 on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University.
We will continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19 with the well-being and safety of ALA New Mexico Girls State participants and our volunteer staff as our top priority. We will provide additional supplies such as anti-bacterial soap, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes as a precaution for each floor of the residence hall and our on-site first aid staff will have additional resources.
