  • Sunday Updates

Cedar City – Sunday – Reporter: Unknown The residents of Cedar City came together and learned about one another. We became acquainted with the ALA and how we as teenagers can get involved in the political process of America. ________________________________________________ Cactus City – Sunday – Reporter: Danika Fuselier Arriving at 12. Got all the stamps and got a room. We had the first city meeting. After that we walked to the cub and went into the city rooms. We went to the ballroom then to lunch. Then back to the rooms and to dinner, then city rooms, and to the dorms. ________________________________________________ Cactus City – Sunday – Reporter: Unknown Today we learned many things. My city learned that going for gold is the sort of mentality needed not just for the Olympics, but in city life too. We learned that no government official is simply a title. We learned that enthusiasm is our friend, and shyness our enemy. We also learned the simpler things, too. Every girl is a potential friend, no matter her party, city, or county. All chants are valuable – the louder the better. It’s all about winning and fun, Cactus City is number one!

  • Today in Spruce

Today in Spruce, we worked on our campaigns and split into our parties and had so much fun learning new cheers, meeting the other girls from other cities and counties, and getting to know each other. During lunch we discussed our bills and if they should be passed, tabled, or not passed. We also had a talent show, which was very fun. Everyone enjoyed watching each other perform! After the talent show our candidates were announced. Spruce finished off the night with some ice breakers and finishing any other business. Respectfully submitted, Hannah Kuhn Spruce City Reporter

  • Election Results are in!

Reagan Pennypacker, Cedar City Reporter Today, Cedar City received excellent election results. We, as a city, were pleased to hear such a strong group of young leaders would be representing our town and upholding our city motto: Sapientia et universali ambitio, or Wisdom, Ambition, and Blessings. We have great confidence in our mayor’s efficiency and capabilities to command our town with grace and poise. Our four City Councilwomen, who will assist the mayor in the selection of appointment-based positions, Alexis Torres, Chief City Councilwoman, Autumn Pearson, Melanie Alderette, and Grace Hendricks, are excited to uphold the honor associated with this position. City Clerk, Mariyah Lucero is eager in completing her secretarial duties under Mayor Chabrielle. Mikayla Dawn Fuller, Cedar City’s Treasurer, is enthusiastic in completing the general budget for Cedar City this week. Last, but certainly not least, Municipal Judge, Taylor Torres is zealous to perform the duties necessary for her office. The 65 girls currently attending ALA Girls State NM connected today over topics in relation to the continuing fight for female equality in American Society. All girls who participated in this open forum dictated their intellectual thoughts in a polite manner and all induced deep thought among all girls in attendance. During the presentation after lunch, we learned about the evolution of the American flag, what it symbolizes and the different folds’ meanings and representations. We learned about the symbolism of the poppies, introduced after World War 1 as a symbol of renewal. The videos watched and songs presented while the decorating of the Poppy Wreath commenced certainly brought tears to my eyes and I am sure many others shared those deep, patriotic feelings. Cedar City is certain that we will enjoy the next four days of our journey together and treasure each moment we share together.

  • Twofold Tuesday!

Dana Thalmann, Pine City Reporter Day two of Girls State was quite a success--well, except for a few minor setbacks like the unexpected appearence of a lightning storm--and we managed to elect all of our officials. The mayor (yours truly!) along with the other electorial positions worked toegetherto create a budget, nominate committee members, and do other government type things. We also voted to create city rules and punishments and VERY enthusiastically enforced these rules with other delegates that dared disobey them! In addition to all of our city accomplishments, Pine City began to file and campaign for positions in both the upcoming county and state elections. We even singed up to participate in the talent show. The majority of the city is exceeding their limits by extending outward of individual comfort zones and going for the gold! There's a lot of potential here; it'll be interesting to see how this potential all plays out.

  • We've Arrived!

Dana Thalmann, Pine City Reporter Pine city residents arrived at the location after a long, dreary drive, but the enthusiasm remained high as we established a city cheer (and got some food into our stomachs). Campaign-ees were also established and now we’re preparing for much needed sleep. Tomorrow will be full of great opportunities; who will seize them? We’ll find out!
