Samsung American Legion Scholarship

Worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea's aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. As of 2019 the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded more than $6.5 million in college scholarships to 2,308 applicants since its inception in 1996.

Award Amounts

Samsung scholarships may be used for undergraduate studies and applied toward tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Winners are selected according to academic record, involvement in school and community service.

  • Ten National Scholars receive $10,000 each (two from each region)

  • Ten National Runners-Up receive $5,000 each (two from each region)

  • Remaining Department Finalists receive $1,250 each guaranteed

Eligibility

New Mexico American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State participants who are a direct descendant (i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, or a legally adopted child) of a U.S. military veteran or active duty military member who served (or are serving) from Dec. 7, 1941 to the present are eligible to apply.

Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War Era Veterans will receive 3 bonus points.

Applicants with membership to the American Legin/American Legion Auxiliary will receive a bonus point. Or, they can receive a bonus point by uploading a membership card of a parent. No more than one bonus point for an application.

New Mexico American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State attendees that have just completed their junior year of high school and have one semester remaining of school (class of 2025) are eligible to apply.

Deadline


Application must be completed online in its entirety by 11:59 pm Sunday, June 2, 2024. If eligible, complete the online application as early as possible. Any incomplete applications after this time will be found ineligible. There will be no exceptions to this deadline.

You will be able to save your progress and return to complete the form as needed. Once you select to submit the form you will not be able to make any further changes to your application so ensure all content is correct before submitting.

Please work with your school advisor to complete this application as your school will need to verify part of your information via email.

Applications will be reviewed and scored by NM Boys/Girls State officials during session. The department finalists will be announced Friday, June 7, 2024 during the Closing Assembly. The American Legion NM Boys State finalist and the ALA NM Girls State finalist will be forwarded for national review for the opportunity to win a $10,000 scholarship award.
